You can apply it manually or download the registry file which enables and disables this feature. I deploy it to all Windows 7 machines I own and it works beautifully.

No video playback when using home sharing on iTunes for Windows

I recently configured iTunes Home Sharing on my home network. My WHS server is the central library sharing both my Music and Video files. All my videos are encoded into H.264/MP4 format. All my machines are authorized and has access to Home Sharing. All my machines are running the latest version of iTunes 9.

On my Snow Leopard machines iTunes happily plays the videos and music with no issues.

On the Windows 7 machines however the play button fades for about 2 seconds when selecting a shared video and then nothing happens. The Windows machines are running the latest Community Codec Pack. Music sharing works perfectly on the Windows machines.

When accessing the videos through the native WHS media connect sharing as well as through the file share I can play them perfectly on the Windows 7 machines. When adding the file to the iTunes library on the Windows 7 machine it also plays perfectly.

Any advice, ideas or suggestions as to how to play the videos I have shared through Home Sharing on Windows 7?

This handy Thunderbird help document on profiles gives you all the information you need.

On Windows Vista/XP/2000, the path is usually %AppData%\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\, where xxxxxxxx is a random string of 8 characters. Just browse to C:\Documents and Settings[User Name]\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\ on Windows XP/2000 or C:\users[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\ on Windows Vista, and the rest should be obvious.

On Windows 95/98/Me, the path is usually C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\

On Linux, the path is usually ~/.thunderbird/xxxxxxxx.default/

On Mac OS X, the path is usually ~/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/xxxxxxxx.default/

This article describes the new model within IE8 for handling tabs in detail.

Basically it's limited to how many copies of explorer it can launch on your machine, so therefore the limit will be the amount of memory it can have access to or in the almost impossible event of you running out of threads.

There is a registry tweak to control how it opens the tabs, but none to restrict them.

The short answer. It won't and it won't be fixed.

Since Virtual PC 2007 is not officially support on Windows 7, and the reason Virtual PC was reworked and re-introduced along with Windows 7, there is no plans from Microsoft to do further support for Windows 7 including the guest additions on Virtual PC 2007. Best bet is to upgrade your Virtual Machine to the new version.

We had this problem during the beta tests and this was the official response from Microsoft when asked during various live meetings.

If you can't use the new Virtual PC look at moving to VirtualBox. It has native support for Virtual PC images and you will only need to install the Virtual Box extensions. However remove the Virtual PC extensions first, and you may have to update some hardware devices. I have used it often to mount and run VHD's directly.

As pointed out by Ivo this prompt will only appear when doing a manual Windows Update. Automatic updates pushed via WSUS or Windows Updates set to automatically install will not prompt the user for this.

If you using WSUS when approving the update you will be prompted for the EULA once as administrator and it will be accepted for all machines on the WSUS server.

Jump-list support is a feature of the application and therefore can only be implemented by the developers. The application needs to have the ability to keep track of recently used files, and there is a specific developer API set that can be used to support the feature.

I can't recall if Putty is still actively being developed however you will most likely need to make a feature request for this. As pointed out by Snark there is a request for this here already, and the actual code is available here if your willing to compile yourself.

Have you tried taking ownership of the folders? These are normally remnants of a Windows Update or Windows Installer program.

The only way to stop the blank page is to use Right Click and Save Link As.

Since Chrome does not natively support an embedded PDF reader it assumes the PDF link is trying to open another page. It then let's the file system take over allowing your PDF reader to open the actual file. It doesn't have any facility to close the new tab that opened as it assumes it is being used for displaying the file.

However there is good news. You can use the Docs Preview Extension to preview all these documents in Chrome and it will stop this behaviour since the files will open in Chrome.

There is a trick to doing this I learn installing my HP.
Do not plug the printer into the computer when doing this

Install a new printer as if it's local to your computer.
When it asks for the driver tell it to use Windows Updates and wait.

Once it completes the WU download select any driver and cancel at the next screen.
Install the printer as normal and the driver should now be in the list.

Windows 7 comes with a very small list of printer drivers, and for some reason installing via the network does not allow Windows Updates to download the complete list. This process is only required once or if the printer you was produced after Windows 7 released.

The current development channel version has a problem with saving cookie settings and it's a know bug.

Since you don't specify why you want RAID my answer is going to include a link to this brilliant article from one of WHS team members here with regards to why WHS doesn't use RAID, however it covers the advantages and disadvatages of RAID very well.

RAID-0 is solely for speed, and since you already have the SSD drives, the only real advantage it is going to give you is? I am not sure to be honest. RAID needs power and any person that has managed RAID server will tell you it is heavy on drives themselves hardware wise.

If you using RAID for backup purposes, well then your doing the wrong thing and rather invest in an external backup solution or alternatively a server like WHS for example.

Very few power user need RAID even at home. The performance impact is minimal when compared to hardware life.

If you however do choose to go this route, it really depends how much your spending on the board. a high performance server board with RAID compared to a desktop board with RAID will always be a better option, depending on who makes the chipset. If you are going to buy a cheap board, which you shouldn't anyway, I would suggest looking at an external card. Most of the top RAID cards have their chipsets available standalone or on the motherboard, so it may be wiser to investigate what card you want and see if it is available on a motherboard already.

This truly depends on what you want to do. The easiest would be VirtualBox with Linux inside a Virtual Machine if your machine has the specifications to handle it. If you are just going to play then it would be perfect.

If you have a low specification machine or planning serious work then installing it as a second OS is a better option. Personally I am not have fun of dual boot because you end up spending more time in one OS then the other.

I am not aware of a setting that does this however, if you use the Win+E shortcut key it will open My Computer by default, and I use this way more often then the icon.

Is the external drive formatted NTFS?

If so by default you don't have rights to write to the drive, only reading. You will need to install an applications like NTFS-3G for Mac which will allow you write access to an NTFS drive.

You can't do this easily, however if your running NTFS you can remove the user rights for the user from the actual application using it's file properties and the Security and Sharing Tab.

If the Guest user is not listed add the user and remove all rights. They will still see the application but will not be able to run it at all.

According to this Microsoft Support Article on the topic:

The folder is not in your user profile (Drive_letter:\Documents and Settings\User_name, where Drive_letter is the drive on which Windows XP is installed and User_name is your user name). The Make this folder private option is available only for files in your user profile (the My Documents folder and its subfolders, and the Cookies, Desktop, Start Menu, or Favorites folders).

The Windows folder is located on a drive that is formatted with the FAT or FAT32 file systems. The Make this folder private option requires the NTFS file system.

From this fairly old blog post here you can have a look at dvdburn.exe which is part of the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit. It is not tied to the OS specifically so you could extract it to your machine and just run it from the command line.

Various links and blog posts reveals that it does work under Windows Vista and 7 althought it is only targetted and Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP.

You will however need to create the ISO first. You will need an application like MagicISO which has a command line tool that allows for the creation of an ISO images before writing it to DVD. However this is not a free tool. You can look at ImgBurn which is free and does also offer a commandline component, however it is not very well documented.

From my brief research and experience it seems like Lenovo has still not released official versions of the drivers for this keyboard that will enable OSD. They do however have some Beta drivers available here.

The display of the OSD is controlled by the drivers. I had the same problem with my Microsoft Keyboards until I loaded the Windows 7 IntelliType drivers.

Your looking at it the wrong way.

Just make sure you create your folder structure in such a way that users only see the folders they are meant to see when drives are mapped. The NT level security will allow you to remove complete permissions on a folder, but will not hide the folder from being seen, whether mapped or when accessing the server using network neighbourhood.

If people are not meant to see it, then put it in a place they can't get too.

I am pretty sure it works the same way as the iPhone. If you have a copy of the firmware onyour local drive, start up iTunes and connect your ipod. You should have an option to restore your iphone on the home screen. Hold down SHIFT or CTRL if memory serves and it will allow you to browse for the firmware you want to load. From there the process will be managed by iTunes.

My home brew solution to this a few years back was to do a basics only install of Linux and X-Windows on a machine and load VMWare Server. I would then remote into each of the machines I wanted using RDP on linux. I used Fedora Core and Ubuntu for this and it worked well.

Most HyperVisors, which is the technology you refer to, comes with no interface. The most common one's I am aware of his Hyper-V HyperVisor which uses Windows Server 2008 Server Core, and VMware ESX. However the focus of these platforms are mainly server virtualization in managed environment. There isn't any of these catered for the scenario your mentioning.

The closest I can think of would be Xen which comes with Linux itself, however I am not sure if it supports the more rescent hardware virtualization and performance features.

Personally I now use VMWare Fusion on my MacBook for my multiple OS needs and it works well in my environment. The major reason I wanted this was to do demonstrations for talks, and for that I built a notebook with just Virtual Machines on it using Hyper-V. The concept of running multiple OS's wears off quite quickly to be honest, since you end up living in one more then the others. Really analyse your needs and then go this route.

When loading updates for Office the current license key is sent back to Microsoft to verify authenticity. During this the key is matched against a list of valid keys, and the reason the key no longer work could be:

The MSDN/Action Pack/Volume License agreement for non-retail key expired
The key was used by more then x amount of users and is considered a pirated key.

Effectively by making the software non genuine service packs and updates cannot be applied, and in some cases functionality is also disabled until a valid key is supplied. If you do have a legit license give the Microsoft License Centre a call and they will be able to assist you with getting your copy registered again.

@Bobby Out of the box? Possibly. I have done it with both Windows, Linux and WHS. From a user perspective WHS has it all built in from the minute you install the OS, no configuration required. I still haven't found a single linux distrubution that does it out of the box.
