I have a machine (lets call it MachineB) that I create an ssh tunnel to, so I can then ssh into the rest of the hosts in the cluster. AllowAgentForwarding is enabled on MachineB's sshd_config and others are able to ssh from one machine to another within the cluster without re-entering their credentials, however I cannot. I have pushed my public key to all the machines in the cluster, and when I have the tunnel active I can ssh directly from my local machine to machines in the cluster without having to enter password, but if I then try and ssh from that machine to another machine in the cluster I have to reenter my password (but others don't have to). I've tried looking at the config files of the people that have agent forwarding working, but theirs looks identical to mine.

I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.6, OpenSSH_5.2p1, and OpenSSL 0.9.8l

My local .ssh/config is:

 StrictHostKeyChecking no
 ServerAliveInterval 60

 User john

 Host MachineB.example.com MachineB
 User john
 ForwardAgent yes
 ProxyCommand none
 ControlMaster auto
 ControlPath ~/.ssh/master-%r@%h:%p

 Host *
 ForwardAgent yes
 ProxyCommand ssh -x MachineB 'nc %h %p'

The .ssh/config on MachineB is

ForwardAgent yes
StrictHostKeyChecking no

The SSH_AUTH_SOCK environment variable is defined on both my local machine and MachineB.

Here is the output when I ssh to MachineB

OpenSSH_5.2p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8l 5 Nov 2009

  • My guess would be the agent isn't running or isn't connected to the socket specified by SSH_AUTH_SOCK. Mar 26, 2011 at 10:33
  • I have the same issue and tried this with no luck :/ Nov 28, 2012 at 19:09

Finally figured it out. The issue was my private key was unencrypted (I didn't enter a passphrase when I created it). Apparently ssh wont let you forward an unencrypted private key.

The way I fixed it was I went to my ~/.ssh directory. My private key was called id_rsa and my public key was id_rsa.pub. I created a backup of my private key called id_rsa.bak. I then ran the command "openssl rsa -in id_rsa.bak -des3 -out id_rsa" and entered a passphrase when prompted. Then the first time I used ssh to connect to another machine I was prompted for my passphrase and I checked the box "save in keychain" that is available on Macs so I don't have to enter the passphrase again.

Hmmm, any documentation supporting this idea that the private key must be encrypted with a passphrase?
