I am trying to perform paswordless key based authentication.

In ssh_config on the server to which I am trying to upload the files, when

AuthorizedKeysFile .ssh/authorized_keys

I am able to sftp to the server using the command sftp -o IdentityFile="~/.ssh/id_rsa" [email protected]

I tried changing

AuthorizedKeysFile /sftproot/keys/%u/autherized_keys

Now running the same command does not succeed in connecting to the server.

This is the log

sftp -vvv -o IdentityFile="~/.ssh/id_rsa" [email protected]

In the log, I can see

debug1: Offering public key: /root/.ssh/id_rsa debug3: send_pubkey_test debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey, password

The client waits for a reply and then stops to do so abruptly. I am not able to narrow down to the exact problem here. Any help will be appreciated.

Could it be as simple as a spelling error?

AuthorizedKeysFile /sftproot/keys/%u/auth>>e<<rized_keys

-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 802 Jul 29 20:05 auth>>o<<rized_keys

Thank you.Yes it was. Now let me go jump in front of a bus.

please don't, because then every single engineer on earth will have to go jump in front of a bus, which will require provisioning far too many buses

The keys in OpenSSH's authorized keys file are in a different format than your typical X.509 ".crt" or PKCS12 (or whatever its called) format.

I can tell from these two lines:

debug3: Not a RSA1 key file /root/.ssh/id_rsa.
debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type '-----BEGIN'

Use ssh-keygen to make your keys and not OpenSSL or whatever tool you used.

I researched trying to make SSH keys part of an X.509 PKI but gave up. I don't know if it's possible.

  • The same message is being logged for successful authentications too. And I use ssh=keygen for generating the keys. For the same key when I change the path in AuthorizedKeysFile, authentication fails.

  • Something's wrong with the format of that file. Is it in the same format as the original file?

  • Yes. Checked it. Its in the same format.
