On a Mac OSX I'm running virtualbox 4.2.16 with a centos 6.3 guest. On the centos guest when I issue ifdown eth0 or ifup eth0 I get:

usage: ifdown <device name>

Same thing with eth1. What am I doing wrong here?

The network works -- I can access sites -- but I want to bounce it. ifconfig shows:
