All of a sudden while I was working a window popped up asking to install an update on Java:

enter image description here

After it downloaded and started to install it popped up an error saying, "An error occurred while extracting the archive. Please try again later."

How long should I wait? How do I try again (the dialog disappeared)? It did not give me any options except to "Cancel Update".

In control panel, locate and click Java control panel, at update tab click update now. In addition please visit https://www.java.com/en/download/help/java_update.xml

  • If I update this will it cause problems with any running Java apps or software that uses Java? Oct 25, 2015 at 9:15
  • That entirely depends on the Java software

The issue was permissions after updating to Catalina.

Try running the following:

$sudo chmod a+w /Volumes

And use the Java update again. It will go through.
