What (free) program will allow me to double click on a rar and have it just expand everything into a folder, the way it does when I open a zip, or nearly any other kind of archive?

Dupe? superuser.com/questions/52124/… – JMD Jan 28 '10 at 0:19
That is a different question. It is looking for any program to unrar, I already have a program that can do that. – Jeffrey Aylesworth Jan 28 '10 at 1:26
@Jeffrey When you say "expand", that's going to make people think you mean "unrar". Because that's what happens by default on a Mac, it unzips zips, so it sounds like you want to unrar RARs. – phoebus Jan 28 '10 at 4:59

@phoebus: I do want to unrar them, and that question is also different from what I want. I want to double click on the rar, and have it expand (unrar) the archive like the program that comes wtith mac, but handles rars. – Jeffrey Aylesworth Jan 28 '10 at 21:07

The Unarchiver is free and acts in much the same way as the built in decompresser. And it's got a lovely set of icons.

Try 7zip. It is similar to Rar, but more easy to use.

+1 7Zip is all you need. – Bobby Jan 28 '10 at 8:38
Doesn't do what I want. I already have 7-zip installed – Jeffrey Aylesworth Jan 28 '10 at 21:07

The only tool I'm aware of that opens it transparently like a folder is Springy, although it isn't free (but very well priced at $19.95):

There's http://www.zipeg.com/ It's free and works for Tiger and Leopard.
