Does anybody know a web-based, simple service for private chat communication (Like a messenger program) and file exchange?

Windows Live is supposed to have a web version of its messenger, but their whole platform is such a incoherent collection of services and gadgets, I got lost trying to find it. I really need something totally straightforward and simple, either as an on-line service or a server-based application for PHP.

Meebo works...but it's definitely not minimalistic. If you want small, check out http://jwchat.org/ It's A web based Jabber/XMPP client.

You can use meebo. It's a web front-end for a lot of IM clients.
