If one of the latest PowerPC Macs (shipped in 2006, I believe) is upgraded to the latest OS that the machine can support, what versions of the popular browsers can it support?

The latest OS it will support is 10.5, and all the major browsers that have apple versions are supported on that OS. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/system-requirements.html Safari(can't find the link to system reqs.) and Camino, Opera Chrome - per this link works on 10.5, but intel procs only. http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95411 |

Latest stable Firefox 3.6.x (but they will probably drop support in 4.0) Latest stable Opera 10.6x (support is dropped in snapshots of 10.70) Latest Safari. WebKit (engine of Safari) will not probably drop support for PPC in near future, but I'm not sure about Safari personally because it's proprietary software; but you may consider other WebKit-based browsers) Also you may look into this thread: http://www.powerdeveloper.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=13828#13828 |

IceCat (formerly IceWeasel) is a port of the Firefox code to run on Linux & Mac OS X http://www.gnu.org/software/icecat/ It's currently up to Firefox 7 code, and runs many of the same extensions, too. (Mac OS X users get it via Another Firefox port is TenFourFox ( http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/ ) which is running quite happily on my PowerMac G5 running 10.5.8 ...in fact they even have custom versions built for various processors (G3, G4, G4e, G5). Their code is currently up to Firefox 8 compatibility, but it doesn't support Flash, or other plugins (sometimes that's a bonus ;-). Although neither could claim to be "popular", they do provide modern Firefox experience for older machines. |
