Welp, computer died. Time to get a new motherboard.

I haven't been paying attention to the latest motherboard technology and associated models and chipsets.

Can someone point me at an overview of what is currently available? I'm primarily interested in the Intel / nvidia side of things.

Well, Nvidia mainly make (but not just) AMD based motherboards and Intel is obviously for Intel, so you are covering pretty much the whole market.

When it comes to Motherboards, I would simply get the cheapest from a good brand that supports the CPU and Memory you want.

For me, this usually comes down to a Gigabyte, Foxconn or Intel own brand with 4 memory slots, 4 Sata slots and a variety of other things. (To me, the most important at the moment is uses just solid state capacitors).

Again, it is really hard to give general advise - there are hundreds (if not thousands) of boards to choose from. But I hope this points you in the generally correct direction.

I'm looking for more general information. The last I was paying attention, Intel was soon to be releasing the Core i7 line. That has now been released. Has there been any other new developments in the broader scheme of things? – Ian Feb 4 '10 at 19:50

not really :S Core 2 is being phased out and a whole new range, core i3, i5, i7 is in... that's about it! Still, you are best off finding the CPU you want, then filtering motherboards that support it by price, and look that way... It is how I choose. – William Hilsum Feb 4 '10 at 21:03
i realize now i should have rephrased my question to emphasize CPU technology as opposed to motherboard tech, which would naturally follow the CPUs. – Ian Feb 4 '10 at 22:39

First A Crash Course in Modern Hardware by Cliff Cocks, and an article from EDN on current chipsets - x86 processors: Continued innovation is a welcome contradiction, followed by reading guides and reviews from PC enthusiasts like ArsTechnica's Hardware section.

And potentially Ars Technica's Jon Stokes' Inside the Machine is a good overview if you don't have right-now information, but a better understanding in general about current PC technology.

PC Perspectives has lots of reviews and articles; I'd also recommend reading customer reviews on sites like NewEgg
