I'm trying to buy a domain that someone apparently parked thru GoDaddy. This is what the whois info (from GoDaddy's own registry site) currently reads:

Registrar: GODADDY.COM, INC.
Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com
Referral URL: http://registrar.godaddy.com
Name Server: NS57.DOMAINCONTROL.COM
Name Server: NS58.DOMAINCONTROL.COM
Status: redemptionPeriod
Updated Date: 28-jan-2010
Creation Date: 17-dec-2007
Expiration Date: 17-dec-2009

>>> Last update of whois database: Sat, 06 Feb 2010 20:49:41 UTC <<<

As you can see, the domain expired on Dec 17, 2009, and has status "redemption period". According to the GoDaddy knowledge base, redemption period means:

REDEMPTIONPERIOD: The domain expired, and the registry is waiting for 30 days as a precautionary measure before releasing it.

On another knowledge base page, it says:

On your domain registration's expiration date, we attempt to renew the domain. If we cannot renew the domain (for example, if the card on file expired), we notify you of your domain registration's expiration and park your domain. You can manually renew your domain.

On the 5th day following your domain registration's expiration date, we attempt to renew the domain. If we still cannot renew the domain, we send a second notification of your domain registration's expiration. You can manually renew your domain.

On the 12th day following your domain registration's expiration date, we attempt to renew the domain. If we still cannot renew the domain, we send a third and final notification of your domain registration's expiration, and we place the domain on hold. You can manually renew your domain.

On the 19th day following your domain registration's expiration date, your domain remains on hold but becomes subject to a redemption fee. You can call customer support to renew your domain, subject to any applicable renewal and redemption fees.

On the 25th day following your domain registration's expiration date, domains are placed for auction with a domain industry auction service. You can manually renew your domain, subject to any applicable renewal and redemption fees.

On the 42nd day following your domain registration's expiration date, we cancel your domain. All services associated with the domain are removed.

If it expired on December 17, 2009, 42 days later would be 1/28/2010 and 75 days later would be 3/2/2010. I want to find when it will be deleted so I can register the domain name regularly thru 1&1. When will this happen?

If I am wrong, please say - I calculated that it has been 51 days since 17/12/09 - not 75.

It takes approximately 75 days for a domain to go back to not-registered and a state where anyone can register - how this date is not set in stone and changes depending on registrar.

Typically, you get approximately 14 days to re-register your domain at the normal price with no penalty - after that, there is usually the redemption period for ~2 months where they try and charge you lots (sometimes as high as £200) to get your domain back.

Lastly, there is a few days for it to actually be deleted and go to a process where anyone can register.

Simply wait a bit longer - I have no experience with Godaddy, Sometimes the WHOIS will change to "releasing" or similar a day before, but this is no way guaranteed. You really want to either join a service such as Godaddy's Alert Pro Service, Club Drop or similar services.
