What is the best software for desktop recording?

Looking for a screencasting tool, that allows me to show two windows in the screen cast. For example, if I'm working on an application, and I also want to have the log file show up in another window during the screencast. Basically, one video that shows both me working on the app, and then another small little windows that would show the log file?? any suggestions???

Logs of what? And does the logs have to be screencasted as well or should they only be visible to you? – Ivo Flipse Feb 8 '10 at 17:04
example would be, im demoing an app, and i want to show what type of entries the apps log file would have it in when i do certain things. i would want them visible to the person viewing the screencast. – duhaas Feb 8 '10 at 17:16
Why not just place the log file window on top of the window you are recording? Then when recording your screen, it will capture both at once? Am I missing something? – davr Feb 8 '10 at 23:26

I was under the impression he wanted something to share his screen, not just record it. @~quack – Ivo Flipse Feb 9 '10 at 6:51

What you're looking for is Picture-in-Picture mode (PIP), Camtasia has this feature.

thanks, would have to see if i could use an actuall app windows instead of a webcam as the second windows: A Picture-in-Picture (PIP) is an additional video clip (usually a Web camera recording) that plays embedded into the main video or next to the main video. do you have experience with that software package? – duhaas Feb 8 '10 at 17:12
Yes, I've used Camtasia extensively. PIP adds a second timeline to your vide, you can use a different video instead of webcam if you'd like. – John T Feb 8 '10 at 17:20
thanks, one last question, can that second video that i would add be a video that was taking place side/side with the first video – duhaas Feb 8 '10 at 17:26
@duhaas Yes, but I don't think camtasia allows you to record 2 things at the same time. You can record it with another app simultaneously, or record the entire screen then cut out each piece and overlay the log file piece onto the main window. – John T Feb 8 '10 at 17:49
perfect, yeah that would work, using jing right now and their free offering which works very well. do you know if that video source can be a flash file? – duhaas Feb 8 '10 at 18:31
