I used Microsoft Word's (2007) feature for removing metadata:

Prepare -> Inspect Document -> Check all options -> Click "Inspect"

But the recipient was still able to see an alternate email address of mine that I could not find anywhere in the document.

I can't figure out where this could have been stored. Any ideas?

The alternate email address may be stored as a document Variable, which can be added with a VBA command, or added via WordML on a Word XML format of the document.

It is hard to answer the question because you do not mention where the recipient was able to see the alternate email address - in the document's main content? Or was it found by a metadata tool itself? Most metadata tools allow document Variables to be considered as potential metadata.
