Super User is a question and answer site for computer enthusiasts and power users. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am trying to download a Flash video, so I can try to convert it to a normal DVD.

(FYI: this is a religious video.)

Is it possible to download this video? If so, how could I do this?

Does it change anything that it's a religious video? –  Camilo Martin Sep 25 '10 at 5:50

@Camilo Martin - It was just fair warning so that people don't think I am trying to do covert preaching on Super User. –  Vaccano Sep 25 '10 at 23:46

Also, its useful to know he's not trying to download YouTube vidoes with songs and then extract the audio track, as that would be unauthorized procurement of the song. –  xbonez Mar 4 '11 at 18:47

If you have Firefox, install the Download Helper extension.

If you have firefox, it temporary saves flash videos in temporary directory :-) –  geek Feb 11 '10 at 12:38

In Safari it's a bit convoluted, but if you

  1. start 'loading' or playing the flash video, then
  2. from the Window menu select Activity

you'll see something loading with the extension flv or swf. (In the case of the linked video above, it's actually an MP4 file, which may or may not be because I use clickToflash on my Mac.)

  1. Hold down option and double-click the flv or whatever file as it's loading, and you should see the download begin.

Easily download YouTube movies via Safari Web Browsers has a (possibly clearer) explanation, along with a bunch more application recommendations that can automate this process for you, including a bookmarklet:

Here is the simplest way by which you can download any flash video from any website:

  1. Go to http://file2hd.com
  2. Enter the page-url
  3. Check "I have read and agree to the Terms of Service."
  4. Select Object
  5. Right click on the file with extension .swf and save it!

Not sure about the browser you're using, but I just attach a solution to each one below.

DownloaderHelper for FireFox - this browser extension works perfectly on Firefox by attaching a tiny download icon to besides the address bar. Whenever you're streaming a video, it will detect the clip and ask if you want to download it. Just search the name in Google and you can install it easily.

FVD Downloader for Chrome - available in Chrome store, this add-on works for all main-stream video sharing sites and can grab videos effortlessly. It also works as adding a download arrow near the address bar while the color will change when a downloadable video is being played. Simply clicking the arrow will add the video to download list. That's it.

Despite the browser plugins, you may also use a site which provides free download service to do the trick. I would recommend websites like Zamzar which can directly download a video in any formats on all browsers.
