PassMark has a performance test tool:

http://www.passmark.com/products/pt.htm

I don't know that it compares your PC against other specific models, per se, but it runs some standard tests that allow you to see how well your PC performs.

FWIW, PassMark has a free 30 day trial. I've never run across a completely free tool though. – DWong Feb 11 '10 at 19:18

Geekbench is useful for comparing CPU and memory performance between different computers, even if they use different operating systems.

A list of the best Benchmarking softwares are 3D Mark 06, vantage, Wprime 32M, Superpi 1M and Cinebench 10.

They provide from CPU to GPU benchmarking. Use WPrime or SuperPi if you want to check only the CPU.
