Hey, I think this falls well within the grey shadow over the border of on-or-off-topic concepts, so...

I have several speakers lying around my office, from discarded cheap 5.1 systems. I would love to ditch my laptop headphones and set up a 2.1 basic speaker system capable of reproducing at least enough bass to make white nouse effective, never mind making Bach's organ music even more energizing. Let's face it, organs are stimulating.

So, where can I get guidence on spec'ing and building a good, hi-fi- quality PC music amplifier?

[As is, soldering together caps and transistors etc]

IF you want DIY, forget the transistors and make a tube amp! :) ken-gilbert.com/building-your-own-tube-amp – Molly7244 Feb 13 '10 at 19:20

as much as i love DIY and audio and think this is a great question, i don't think it's computer related. try one of these StackExchange sites: electronics.stackexchange.com or chiphacker.com or go.takeitapart.net ... or something else on this list: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/4/list-of-stackexchange-sites – quack quixote Feb 13 '10 at 20:51
Thank you to @~quack for the list of alternative resources. – Troggy Feb 14 '10 at 4:58
Thanks to quack from me as well. I just didn't know where else to ask this, and even if it's closed here and moved on, the SuperUser spirit has helped. – ProfKaos Feb 15 '10 at 11:09

Questions on Super User are expected to generally relate to computer software or computer hardware, within the scope defined in the faq.

There are some amplifier ICs that allow one to build very good quality amplifiers relatively easily and cheaply, such as LM3876, LM3886 and TDA7293 to name but a few.

A Google on DIY amplifiers or Gainclone should get you some circuit diagrams; I like the ones on this site and this bloke has some good pictures of what he has done.

What to use depends partly on where you are and what you can get hold of easily and cheaply: getting a decent toroidal transformer and a few fancy capacitors takes up quite a large portion of the budget.

And, by the way, I think this is probably without the remit of this site. – Neal Feb 13 '10 at 20:12
maybe not, some (including my old self) using high end sound cards, amplification speakers to enjoy quality sound from a computer. so in a way, it is computer-related :) – Molly7244 Feb 13 '10 at 20:19
