I am wanting to build a new PC with some of these core features.

I would like...

A dual or quad core intel CPU

8 or more GB of RAM

2 SSD hard drives in RAID 0

Can anyone recommend a motherboard/cpu combination that can handle 8 or more GB of RAM and a dual or quad core processor?

Also if I buy 2 SSD drives, what else would I need to set them up in RAID 0 for increased speed for my Windows 7?

Appreciate any suggestions, I don't have a budget really but lower cost is always a plus

I'm a regualr reader of ZDNet and one of the Hardware articles that has recently cropped up should suit this post to the ground.

The motherboard mentioned supports SATA Raid 0, (I must admit Raid 0 scares the hell out of me, the chance of data loss is double than when using just 1 drive, although I'm assuming you know this and will be performing regular backups)

I'd also reccomend going through some more of Adrians past posts on Hardware. You might uncover some ideas in there.

If you're going for one of Intel's newer Core i5 or Core i7 processors, the motherboard will likely support at least up to 8 GB; many appear to support 16GB or even more. Approximately how "lower cost" are you looking for? The cheapest Core i3 is just $125, and gets you a dual core processor with hyperthreading, which gives you 4 effective threads. On the other end, the most expensive Core i7, with 4 hyperthreaded cores for 8 threads is almost $1000. What you buy really depends on your needs.

Given your limited information, I'd say a Core i5-661 might be a good choice, and whatever Socket LGA 1156 motherboard fits your fancy. But again, without more info on what you'll be doing with the computer, it's hard to say what you need. A Pentium Dual Core E5200 is less than $70 and will do everything that most typical desktop users need. Based on your request for lots of RAM and SSDs though, that might not fit your needs.

I would say Core i5 or Core i7. But it depends on how much you want to spend. You also like to have some SSD, these are pretty pricey. For motherboards you can check this: Asus Motherboards. And than click on Intel socket 1366.
