I am talking about computer LCD, not LCD TVs!

Right now the largest LCD you can get is a 30" from various companies. The resolution is a 16:10 widescreen 2560x1600.

The maximum resolution of one DisplayPort cable is 2560x1600, so it seems like we have reached the current end of LCD displays, however my understanding you can use multiple DisplayPort cables to aggregate bandwidth!

There means there is no real limit to the size of LCDs. Given that, what do you think is the next LCD after 30" for computers?

Does it have to be for computer use only? I believe Samsung makes some LCDs that could be used for both purposes at 32" – Steve Jul 22 '09 at 18:20

The "computer use" LCDs are more likely to be higher resolution than 1920x1080 (or 1200), and also probably more likely to be easier/better for reading text. – jtimberman Jul 22 '09 at 18:36

I think the "computer use only" distinction here is somewhat arbitrary. Anything larger than 30" is going to be too big for traditional applications: you're going to need to start sitting further back from the display - essentially a tv – David Snyder Jul 22 '09 at 18:54

A Table with some useful information.
FAQ: LCD Monitor Sizes.

And, your answer from there would be 32 30 Inches.

But as the chart points out, the highest resolution is at 30". – Lance Roberts Jul 22 '09 at 18:29
@Lance, very correctly noted. – nik Jul 22 '09 at 19:02
@Lance, Also like ` medikgt` notes, I know someone who uses a Samsung panel as a monitor. So, I leave further analysis to Pyrolistical. – nik Jul 22 '09 at 19:03
@nik: So why don't you change your answer to reflect those tables and write 30" instead of 32"? – Robert Koritnik Oct 24 '09 at 15:27
@Robert, Done... – nik Oct 25 '09 at 13:21

Eizo has a 3840x2160 pixel display for computer use, that measures 52 inches! All other panels are TV's, or based on TV panels.

I have a 27" lcd, and I can't imagine a monitor much larger being anything but diminishing returns. Maybe multiple 27" (or 30"). There's only so much space you can view immediately in front of your face. Peripheral vision isn't accurate, and it can be distracting.

some guy is often (wrongly!) quoted: "640kb ought to be enough" :) – Molly7244 Oct 25 '09 at 13:38
