This doesn't exactly look genuine, what may have caused this?!

It's definitely been infected with something unpleasant if it changed your homepage without asking. – Johnny W Sep 11 '10 at 13:49

There are free programs out there which change the homepage during its installation, but usually they would ask you if you want to do so. Was anything installed before the homepage was changed?

If you can still change the homepage to either "about:blank" or some other URL (like Google's, for example), then it's most likely not caused by malware.
