Is it a solid black screen, or is it the Windows XP boot-up screen?

If the screen is solid black and the computer never shows anything, then my first thought is that your motherboard is the culprit. You'd probably need to either replace capacitors on it or replace the whole thing. At that point you might be better off buying a whole new computer (Windows XP is pretty old now).

If you see the white text on a black background, then the screen goes black and you don't see anything, then it could be a bad MBR or boot loader. If you see the Windows XP boot screen but it doesn't go any further, then it could be a bad Windows installation. Either way, try booting into the Windows XP boot disc, then doing a "repair" of your installation.

Can you provide more information? How far does the computer get in the boot process? Does it get past POST?
