is there any addon that lets you add annotations/notes for a particular part of a web page, and is able to save the annotated page as html files to your hard disk? ScrapBook lets you add sticky annotations and mouse-over tooltips, but it's not very flexible. I'm looking for something that is more like an on-the-fly WYSIWYG html editor that is also easy to add annotations.

This would be very useful when doing research. Thanks!

The ubiquity add on (https://mozillalabs.com/ubiquity/) lets you do some great things, including editing a page diectly in your browser. You should then be able to save or print it in the normal way.

I played it a bit and it's quite a neat addon. Although like Firebug, you cannot save modified whole page to the disk, only the original version will be saved. ScrapBook does capture the modified version though, so can't complain. =) – Dan7 Feb 23 '10 at 18:25
Also it seems the editing function doesn't work well with dynamic pages such as this question's page. It displays the modification along with a "snapshot" of the rest of the page at the time of editing. For example if I edit and save this page when I have comment textarea activated, every time I visit it the textarea will always be there, any new comment will not be displayed, the comment datetime will be screwed up, etc. I plan to use Ubiquity along with ScrapBook so it won't be a problem, just a minor annoyance. – Dan7 Feb 23 '10 at 18:36

I have been using a similar add-on called Scrapbook. It is my personal favorite.

You can also try the following addons:

  1. Diigo Toolbar:Enable multi-color highlighter and post-it notes as your reading aids; Capture the whole page or any portion to share or archive; Save everything online to allow access anywhere.
  2. Ubernote:Add your notes, files, bookmarks, web clips, and ideas from anywhere.
  3. FloatNotes:FloatNotes is a simple Firefox Add-on that allows you to add notes to any website.
  4. Awesome Highlighter:With this tool you can highlight text on any web page and then get a short URL for your highlighted text, so that you can share it with others. You can also copy the selected text to the clipboard, email it or share it on Twitter, Delicious, Facebook or WordPress. When it comes to highlighting, there is a 2000 character limit per each selection. You can also add text notes to web pages.
  5. Blerp:Blerp is great for starting and participating in conversations right on top of any web page. Since there is no registering required to get started, virtually anyone can join the conversation. You can post things like comments, videos and photos on any web page. Blerp offers social integration with Facebook and Twitter; you can sign in with each account and have your Blerps appear in your timelines.

  1. Evernote:Evernote is probably the most popular tool to take notes and organize ideas and information. The great thing about the tool is that it is multi-platform (works on the web and has desktop as well as mobile apps) and keeps your notes in sync.

I'm using the Firefox Add-on Diigo

  1. Save links or the whole webpages online
  2. Attach highlights & stickies to a webpage as a reminder
  3. Share pages with annotation via Twitter, Facebook, Google Buzz
  4. Take screenshot of a whole page or any portion, and annotate
  5. Save everything online for access anywhere, via free apps on iPhone, Android , and iPad .

Note: In their youtube video they are saying it stores screenshots as HTML.
Maybe this is what you are looking for.

The ubiquity add-on is still alive and kicking and even in active development on a regular basis, despite the main page of the website announcing that it was discontinued. Source code is also available.

The latest version of the add-on can be found here, file name is tip.xpi, current version dated from 2011-10-11 and the compatibility is up to Firefox version 10.

@AshutoshDave: As mentioned, the new version in the link above is good up to FF 10. In any case, with the new and accelerated FF version numbering system, add-ons get disabled much too fast, but there are remedies to the problem. – harrymc Dec 1 '11 at 11:10
