My laptop just died - what would you recommend I buy for a basic, portable machine/laptop. I just need basic stuff like wifi, large disk space, decent specs on the processor and RAM and preferably some good media handling. Any suggestions?

I have had lots of good luck with Thinkpads. I use them at home and at work, and lenovo now has the Ideapad line that is more mainstream and not business focused. I have not used any of those, but if they are similar to thinkpads then they would be a good choice. I personally like the R series, deals with heavy load well. The only thing I noticed is that the disk drives tend to be smallish.

My friends also use some of the high end HP laptops with good luck.
