I have a HP Pavillion dv5224ea laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate Edition. Recently, I tried to do a backup of my machine using Backup and Restore. It starts fine, continues fine until a certain point when it then fails with a I/O Error telling me to run CHKDSK on the source or destination drive. Well, I ran CHKDSK /F /R (on both my external and internal drives), but the error still appears, so I looked in Event Log and saw this error:

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort1.

This error is repeated several times.

I then tried Disk2VHD, but it came up with exactly the same error message (Error during copy: The request could not be preformed because of an I/O Device Error)!

Whats wrong? What is a ATAPI Error? How can I find out what device is not working? Whats a Controller Error? Everything seems alright on my machine (i.e. no sudden restarts, etc). How can I fix this problem?

UPDATE:

Just tried on a whim to only select drive C: and NOT THE SYSTEM RESERVED DRIVE in Disk2VHD. So far everything seems OK (touch wood!). Have also tried to only select "System Reserved" and it failed with a I/O error and a heck of lot of atapi errors! What does this mean? Should I worry....?

Might want to try a different backup utility. EASEUS Home Edition is pretty good – The Green Frog Feb 28 '10 at 10:16
I am not really worrying about the back ups failing. I more worried about all those ATAPI Errors and that I only get those errors when backing up "System Reserved"... – Kryten Feb 28 '10 at 10:24
Do you get an error number in the event log? – Steve Jan 17 '11 at 7:28
Have you tried downloading and installing the latest HDD & HDD controller drivers? – Steve Jan 17 '11 at 7:28
