Currently I have a GeForce 8600GT as a video card. I started playing EVE online and it is not that smooth (Apart from the fact that my Windows 7 is starting to become slow so it needs a format).

Now I have these 3 video cards on my mind:

  • 1GB Gainward GF GT240 PCI-Express Video Card
  • 1GB Gainward GF9800GT PCI-Express Video Card
  • 1GB Gainward GF GT240-GS PCI-Express Video Card

I tried comparing them from nvidia's site: HelpMeChoose but the GT240-GS is not available for comparison. However, when I tried comparing the GT240 with the 9800GT, the latter was the winner. You must keep in consideration that the cheapest one is the GT2400. The 9800GT is in the middle, and the one which is not available for comparison, the GT240-GS is the most expensive one (about 6 euros more than the 9800GT).

Is the GT240-GS the best video card from these?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

You've had Windows 7 for at most 4 months and it already needs a format? – Javier Badia Mar 1 '10 at 17:01
@reyjavikvi: MSDN subscribers have had Win7 since June 2009... ;) – Shevek Apr 9 '10 at 18:18
@Javier - Typical warez XP user from the past. Always reinstalling CUZ IF I REINSTALL I GETZ 2 MOAR FPS ...and so on. I'm actually shocked that you never seen this type... we have a lot of 'em in Hungary. :-/ – Shiki Jul 25 '10 at 6:10

Well, according to the NVidia-Site, the 9800 is the better card. According to the Gainward Products Pages of all three cards, the 240 has a little higher clockspeed, but it seems like that it has a little less core units then the 9800GT.

This is a hard choice, you have more speed against more cores...(personal opinion from here) I'd got with the 240s, they are a little faster, might be slower in certain fields, but use way less power then the 9800GT. And the possibility that you see or feel a difference, is close to nothing.

Gainward's Golden Samples have the highest clocked memory in their lineup. The 9800GT has more stream processors. This means the 9800GT can have more visual details turned on at a moderate resolution, while the GS could have the same framerate at a (very slightly) higher resolution, or more frames per second at the same resolution with less visual details turned on.

Pretty much a wash. See which one has more of the connectors you might need in the future, or uses less power, or is cheaper, whichever drives your boat.

It boggles my mind that 3 years later, nVidia offers nothing for $99 that beats my $99 8800GT. nVidia had to disable some home theater type features in their drivers to make the 8800GT more obsolete looking.

nVidia got caught by surprise when ATI released their 5xxx series, they still don't have anything comparable and now they're so desperate to re-brand old 9800 as 3xx cards, hoping for some eejits to fall for it, they're done. – Molly7244 Mar 1 '10 at 14:50

I'd just go for a much better used card. They are not really stronger nowadays and you get a beast from this much money. (If power consumption is not a problem / you have a powerful PSU).

Every time I have questions about this or that gpu/card, I go here: http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=620&card2=575 . Always been helpful to me, and after reviewing the specs, I go for reviews on google and on the same GPU review site. Hope that helps.
