I'm using FF 3.6 under Win7. In the Tools / Options / Applications dialog, there is a list of content types, and a corresponding list of Actions. The Actions choices are "Always Ask", "Save File", and "Use Other". Certain types have specific applications listed above "Use Other".

I'm trying to get the type "MP3 Format Sound (application/mp3)" to open in the application VLC. When I choose "Use Other" a "Select Helper Application" dialog appears. It has some relevant and many totally non-relevant applications listed (Notepad?? Windows Photo Viewer??) VLC is not on the list. I can click Browse and manually locate VLC.EXE.

However, after clicking OK, nothing has changed. VLC.EXE is not present on the drop-down list above "Use Other". It has not been added to the list of applications that appears when clicking on "Use Other". The next time I click on an MP3 in a web page, I get the Open With - Browse button, which takes me to the list of apps that doesn't include VLC.

Am I missing something, or is this a bug? Shouldn't I be able to associate any application with each content type?

When you open an mp3 file in explorer, does it open with VLC? – CGA Mar 4 '10 at 22:49
Should perhaps clarify that I mean explorer file manager, not Internet Explorer. – CGA Mar 4 '10 at 22:59
Yes, VLC is correctly associated in Windows Explorer (aka file manager). Double-clicking on an MP3 in Windows opens it in VLC. The MP3 icons are the VLC 'cone'. – tim11g Mar 5 '10 at 14:46
