I have two XP workstations on a home network connected to a router via Ethernet. I also have a HP LaserJet P2015 printer. This printer is connected to one of the workstations via USB cable and shared so that the other workstation can print.

The setup has been working fine for a while. Recently however, if I leave the printer on for a while and then try to print, the printer is idle but does not print. To make it print I need to restart the printer then it works fine.

The situation is almost like the printer is going to sleep, but does not wakeup when called to print. This is the case regardless of which workstation I'm printing from.

Any ideas how to resolve this?

Thanks

It could be a problem with the HP drivers. I have the same setup as you with an HP printer at my work, except that when the other workstation tries to print to the shared printer, the printer crashes and has to be turned off and on to reset it (and it doesn't end up printing anyways). Annoying, to say the least, but we can't figure out why it won't work. – Jared Harley Mar 5 '10 at 20:25
Well this printer does print. It just need to be restarted. After that it prints fine until the printer is idle for a while; then it needs to be restarted again. As it actually prints, I didn't think there was anything wrong with the driver. – Sivakanesh Mar 5 '10 at 23:12
It turns out there are whole bunch of problems with HP LaserJet P2000 series. In particular the formatter board fries too easily. A common complaint on Amazon on this model. HP wants to charge for the repair. So time for a new one. – Sivakanesh Apr 16 '10 at 15:27

I know this is old thread, but maybe solution will help someone in future.

For most of the people that have problem with printing on the shared printer, when the printer prints only after restarting the host computer (or print spooler), the solution is to uncheck "Enable bidirectional support" option in printer properties.

Turns out there are many users with similar problem on this model. As the printer is out of warranty I got a new Samsung printer scanner. Seems fine.
