If someone shares a Google Calendar with me, can I copy that calendar so I control it? For example, I want to maintain a static version of that calendar that I know the creator can't change. Is this possible?

You can copy any event to one of your (controlled) calendars, but as far as I can tell this is on a per-appointment basis. There's no way to do it en masse and keep it updated.

You could download an export of the calendar (XML, iCal) that you could import into your own calendar but that would be a static snapshot and, again, wouldn't stay updated to match the "source" calendar.

So no, it doesn't seem that you can do what you're looking for.
