Go to Options > Layout and disable Command prompt. You'll get the desired behavior.

I believe alt+s will show the "quick search" in Midnight Commander. Not sure as i'm writing this from the top of my head and can't confirm it.

Thanks! Can I turn this on by default (so I won't need to press extra Alt-S to begin searhing and maybe another key combiantion to focus on command line)? – jonny Mar 10 '10 at 14:16
