When we say "linux" we mean the Linux kernel developed by Linus Torvalds and the GNU userland developed by the FSF ( Free Software Foundation ) Linux is a Unix clone. BSD - lets talk about FreeBSD ( what I am going to say holds true more or less about the other BSD's as well ) - FreeBSD is developed as one operating system. The kernel + libs +userland are maintained together in a single source code control system ( CVS ) BSD is one of the original Unices but ( confusingly ) cannot be called Unix as that is trademark. BSD is a 'true' unix distribution where as Linux is a unix like operating system. Linux was written originally as a free response to Unix. It has since evolved into a vast number of projects. |

There is an excellent essay over yonder that looks at some of the important philosophical and historical distinctions between BSD and Linux. It is not very practical, but no one really wants a list of "equivalent commands" when asking questions like this anyway. |
