I came across this command while dabbling in Ubuntu 9.10:

sudo get-apt moo

acer@acer:~$ sudo apt-get moo
         (__)
         (oo)
   /------\/
  / |    ||
 *  /\---/\
    ~~   ~~
...."Have you mooed today?"...

Which most surprisingly "made a MOO". (How unfortunate for the cows). Any reason for such cow references ?

Does anyone else know of funny command line or any other easter eggs in their flavour of Linux (Fedora, Linux Mint, BSD, Slackwire, Mandriva, Solaris, Suse, etc)?

Voting to move to SuperUser, because while it's definitely not programming-related, I do quite like the humour. And while I suspect that SU may close the question anyway, I'd like to give it a fighting chance... – David Thomas Mar 13 '10 at 3:26
@ricebowl : Hey, can't we get a thread of such 'black humour' related to coding, command-line, telnet etc ?? ... it may be a welcome change to the trends of stackoverflow and superuser ?? .... Whilst we must try keeping everything ethical and 'parliamentary' ! .. – Arkapravo Mar 13 '10 at 4:27

This question should be a community wiki, as there is no real answer. It's more calling for a list of existing "animals". – Gnoupi Mar 22 '10 at 16:56
@Arkapravo - Also, about "humour" questions, I recommend you to read this article from the Stack Overflow blog: blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/01/stack-overflow-where-we-hate-fun – Gnoupi Mar 22 '10 at 16:59
@Gnoupi : Okay ! .... I will probably rectify the 'animal' thing ! – Arkapravo Mar 22 '10 at 20:46

Related is aptitude's moo feature:

~$ aptitude help

                  This aptitude does not have Super Cow Powers.
~$ aptitude moo
There are no Easter Eggs in this program.
~$ aptitude -v moo
There really are no Easter Eggs in this program.
~$ aptitude -vv moo
Didn't I already tell you that there are no Easter Eggs in this program?
~$ aptitude -vvv moo
Stop it!
~$ aptitude -vvvv moo
Okay, okay, if I give you an Easter Egg, will you go away?
~$ aptitude -vvvvv moo
All right, you win.

What is it? It's an elephant being eaten by a snake, of course.

(Although I honestly think it looks more like a hat.)

try sodomized.cow in stead of tux.cow for an nsfw version

and definitely try this one: telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl (have a little patience, it's awesome)

And finally to kill the whole thing of; I found a pretty extensive list on the ubuntu forums.

Awesome dude ! I tried fortune ..... and this is what I got .... Fatal Error: Found [MS-Windows] System -> Repartitioning Disk for Linux... (By cbbrown@io.org, Christopher Browne) – Arkapravo Mar 13 '10 at 4:11
I totally forgot about cowsay, and I never knew that you could specify alternate "cows". The telnet one isn't actually an easter egg, nor is it linux-specific. You can do it in any OS with any telnet app and internet connection. – TuxRug Jul 17 '10 at 3:20

sudo apt-get install sl

If you type sl by accident an ASCII train will run across your terminal!

Got that ! ..... install 'sl' (sudo apt-get install sl) .... then then type 'sl' (without quotes) in the command line ! – Arkapravo Mar 23 '10 at 2:58

$ emerge moo
