My Zune sorts my podcasts in a really weird order. It doesn't matter how things are sorted on disk, or in the software itself. As items are added to the sync list they end up sorted in some weird manner which doesn't make sense to me.

I feel that if I could understand the logic behind the Zune's default podcast sorting, I could force my Zune to sort things correctly (by tweaking the right tags on the podcast files before syncing them to the device, or setting the right preferences in the sync software, or something).

What do I need to do to ensure my podcasts end up in the order I wish them to be in, not some obscure random order that makes no sense?

To clarify:

During the sync process:

  1. Select files on hard drive
  2. Add files to Zune software
  3. Attach device
  4. Sync device with Zune software

Podcast sorting goes haywire. If anybody has any insight into the process or the logic behind sorting I would greatly appreciate some help here.

Not computer related? Really. – Will Mar 14 '10 at 16:11
@Will. As per the FAQ. Yes. Questions regarding iPhone's, iPod's, Zune's etc are not allowed unless the problem is related to a specificity to syncing with the computer. Issues on the device is not covered by Super User. – Diago Mar 14 '10 at 16:17
@Diago, @Will: after rereading the question, i think this could be sync-related. the original question did a poor job explaining the problem, and the desired outcome. Will, we really need a concrete example of what you mean by "weird sorting order" (and what sorting order you want). – quack quixote Mar 14 '10 at 16:30
that said, if your question is purely how to configure the sort in the settings/preferences on the device itself, then Diago is right and this is not computer related per superuser.com/faq ... but i don't think that's what you're asking. – quack quixote Mar 14 '10 at 16:31

This is a syncing issue. The Zune (at least the HD) looks at the file creation time to perform sorting. If the podcasts have creation times that are not in order, then they will appear in a "wierd" order on the device. – firedfly Mar 15 '10 at 13:29
