What are you really looking for? VLC works fine for DVDs. Free or not? – Snark Mar 14 '10 at 20:57

even tho you install a program like vlc you need a dvd decoder which doesnt not ship with vlc – MrStatic Mar 14 '10 at 21:00
vlc is too complicated for the user i am installing for. – ULTRA_POROV Mar 14 '10 at 21:07

Why do people keep saying VLC is complicated? To me, it seems no more so than, say, Windows Media Player... – sYnfo Mar 14 '10 at 21:22

it's a OS feature, not a player feature wikihow.com/Configure-CD-and-DVD-Autoplay-in-Windows-XP – fluxtendu Mar 14 '10 at 21:28

I don't know why a regular free media player won't suffice, unless you're going under the assumption of less functionality = smaller install size. VLC isn't that big, but if you're really after a DVD player there is Ants DVD Player:

It's a 1.8MB download and installs to about 5MB. Requires DX8 or above, 400MHz CPU, 64MB RAM. Ants DVD Player is freeware.

looks good, downloading now. – ULTRA_POROV Mar 14 '10 at 21:04
it works, as expected but i noticed that the newest version is from 2007. Looks a bit unstable to me. – ULTRA_POROV Mar 14 '10 at 21:11

Well you said you wanted it to be basic, how much more do you want them to add? People usually keep updating software to add features or repair bugs. Maybe it has all the features he intended to add and most bugs are ironed out. That's probably the opposite of unstable. – John T Mar 15 '10 at 0:59

VLC is the best:

Either The KMPlayer or Media Player Classic Homecinema should play DVDs out of the box.

DVD players for windows are scam.

You want to pay for something that already exists. I have never seen any dvd player for windows which does something better than regular Windows Media Player already shipped with Windows.
