I am interested in teaching some students about the basic of technology and wanted to see if there are any free applications that can capture my screen activity and broadcast it live over the web. It should be able to support at least 50 students. The number might grow later.

Are you looking for 2 way communication? You could try the many live streaming video sites like justin.tv if its only one way communication – Nagrom_17 Mar 16 '10 at 15:43

www.dimdim.com allows up to 20 for free. Up to 50 for $25/month. I don't know if you'll find anything that will allow more than 20 for free.

I believe USTREAM works on all platforms and allows you to stream to others (for free), then to share your desktop, take a look at this.

It is not an all in one solution, but it is the only quick free cross platform one I can think of.
