Is there a wireless keyboard and optical mouse combo where the mouse has 5 programmable buttons (plus scroll wheel) but the keyboard is just a plain standard 102 key IBM AT type keyboard, i.e. no extra buttons for the web/email or multimedia etc?

That's a weird combination. Why not just buy the two separately? – zildjohn01 Aug 11 '09 at 20:03

The difficulty comes in your requirement to have a bare bones keyboard and a tricked out Mouse. I personally have the Logitech MX 5500 desktop pictures in @Tyler's response and can tell you that the additional keys on the keyboard have not gotten in my way and the mouse is great.

You're best bet is to mix and match components. You can snag the wireless keyboard from the Logitech EX 100 for $25 then get a separate mouse (this link is for wireless mice with 5 buttons or more) for between $30 and $60.

I think the short answer is "no." Many of the combos with simple keyboards (Logitech Cordless Desktop EX 100).

Desktop EX 100

The MX 5500 desktop does not fit your bill, but if the "wrist pad" is removable that's relatively close to simple. You've still got some media keys, a programmable display, and I'm not a fan of the cramped layout.

MX 5500

Barring that, it sounds like the Das Keyboard folks are planning on bundling their keyboards with some high performance mouse, so if you were okay with a wired/wireless bundle that may work for you. And if you're unconcerned about the wired/wireless combination you could just go grab a Das Keyboard (or a wired Apple keyboard) and a Logitech MX Revolution (I like these mice very much) or a Razer Mamba (the only other wireless mouse that doesn't suck).

I feel like there's a market for a wireless Das Keyboard type keyboard, since Logitech, Kensington, Dell and Microsoft all feel the need to make "better" keyboards have more and more and more buttons.

For the mouse I've currently got the Kensington Optical Elite which is just great, it's wired, and some random simple but quiet keyboard, also wired. These have been going without problems for at least the last five years or so, but I would like to reduce some of the rat's nest of wires. – Rob Kam Jul 24 '09 at 18:16
I think a lot of the wireless mice won't help too much in eliminating the rat's nest because they use a USB charging/receiving station. So you've still got all the USB wires going places. You could go with something like the VX Revolution if you don't have large hands, it relies on you recharging it's batteries. – Tyler Jul 24 '09 at 18:55
It's a good thing that MX 5500 has that built in screen that shows the time, music, incoming IMs, etc. Otherwise I would be forced to look at that massive LCD monitor sitting in front of me. (I kid, I kid. I'm sure there's some good use for it.) – Kevin L. Aug 21 '09 at 21:45

The Dell Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse Bundle has a normal keyboard layout and a 7 button mouse. I've used it at work, but never tried to program the mouse buttons, so I can't speak to the software.
