I have a laptop with a Nvidia 9650M GT and used the drivers that Seven brought me. It works fine but Metro 2033 tells me that I have to upgrade my drivers to play the game. So I did it.

But since I did a clean install of the new Nvidia drivers, I just have 1440*900 or 4:3 resolutions.

I usually played with 1280*800 or 1184*740 (for performance issue) With the "old" drivers I was able to create custom resolution (1184*740) in Nvidia control panel but now when I try it tells me that "my monitor cannot support this resolution".

When I insist, it works but soon as I shut down my computer I have to recreate it..

Do anyone have a fix?

Start by opening the NVIDIA Control Panel. On the left side, expand the Display submenu, and click on Change resolution. At the bottom, you will see a button called "Add Resolutions...". Click it, and in the new window that pops up, click "Create Custom Resolution...". Accept the NVidia license agreement/disclaimer, and enter the information you want.

Make sure you set the refresh rate properly (usually 60Hz), and keep the scan type to progressive. Leave the Timing settings to automatic. Hit test, ensure that the resolution works, and then save it. You should be able to use the resolution from now on.

You may wish to try re-installing the NVidia drivers as well. Uninstall them, run a program to remove all files (e.g. DriverCleaner), and attempt a clean install of the drivers.

Failing that, you may wish to use a third-party utility (PowerStrip is a common one) to force a custom resolution, or alternatively, roll back to an earlier driver (newer isn't always better).

As i said, with the new drivers it won't let me add a custom resolution without a error message. But if i try at least 2-3 times it works (but i still have the error) And every times i reboot my computer the custom resolutions dissapears. (It worked fine before the update). What a shame Nvidia don't support laptops. I will try PowerStrip. Thank you – Wuinny Mar 24 '10 at 13:17
What error message does it tell you? Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers, or another older version? I updated the answer with this new information. – Breakthrough Mar 24 '10 at 14:57
I did a clean install with Driver cleaner. I install the 195.62 (others before do the same) When I want to create the custom resolution it keeps telling me "your monitor doesn't support this resolution" BUT WHAT I CAN SUPPORT 1280x800 ! Um sorry. In Seven control panel I only have 1440x900 / 1280x720 (WTF 16:9 ratio !) / 1024x768 (Yeah.. 4:3 ratio for 16:10 screen) In games I can't play in 1440x900 for performance issues, but others resolutions screw the ratio.. Before, I was running the drivers that Windows 7 gave me via Windows Update and I was able to create custom resolutions. – Wuinny Mar 24 '10 at 15:12
I will revert for the "windows update drivers" that works.. Old but working.. It makes me mad. And powestrip can't add custom resolutions with nvidia 7900 and greater. Yeah. What the hell is so difficult with that ? We sent mens to moon but can't set custom resolutions ? And sometimes, after i hit the "TEST" button for 1280x800 it appears in the list when i quit. (But i keep having the message while testing) And i soon as i reboot.. Bye bye the custom.. Thank you for helping me. – Wuinny Mar 24 '10 at 15:14
Windows update didn't updated my drivers, seems to be happy with the "VGA adaptater" that won't let me play any games. I finally installed DOX modified drivers 195.62 I still can't add custom resolutions BUT i have a huge amount of resolutions (1280x800 included) so.. Seems that nvidia don't like notebook users. – Wuinny Mar 24 '10 at 17:49
