OS: WinXP SP3/ Windows Server 2003 Protocol: SFTP (port 22) Mainly concern on transferring 2-5 big files (over 1GB).

I've tested CuteFtp, FileZilla, SecureCRT and several others. Looks like CuteFTP has the best throughput, usually 200%-400% than others. I've read something about SecureFtp may have slower rate from here. Can anyone explain why CuteFtp has better throughput? And, is there any other FTP client even faster than CuteFtp? Thanks a lot!

Be aware of the encryption and HMAC option in SFTP protocol. Below is the speed test I did from fast to slow. This can give several fold different speed depend on your hardware. Encryp: arcfour > blowfish > aes > 3des HMAC: md5 (128 bit) > sha-96 > sha1 (160 bit)

The fastest SFTP client I knew is Tunnelier. It is considerably faster than WinScp, FileZilla and FireFTP.

Just find the new speed king: the command line sftp from OpenSSH. You can find the binary for Windows from copssh. It beats Tunnelier and it's open-source! – cecilyen Mar 31 '10 at 15:42
Thanks everyone. Tunnelier rocks. – Stan Apr 2 '10 at 1:39
Tunnelier uses 100% of my 2mbit upload via SFTP. Filezilla uses only about 50%, and the other I tried GoFTP uses about 75%-80% – davr Apr 17 '10 at 5:01
A long time back I found that blowfish was the fastest one of those available on our sshd's. It makes quite a difference if the cpus cannot keep up with the default encryption schemes. – Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen Jan 26 '11 at 14:36

It really depends on the operating system. I work primarily on a Mac and thus prefer Transmit. I find it considerably faster then FileZilla or Cyberduck.

Speed depends on the files you're transferring, the server connection, and several other things. You can speed up the upload by using more then one connection to the server (i.e. Uploading one file in multiple parts concurrently or uploading many files in parallel each with it's own connection).

I haven't tried Transmit, but the FTP part of Espresso (macrabbit.com/espresso) is very fast, significantly faster than Cyberduck. It opens up to 16 connections in parallel to download multiple files. But that doesn't help much for Windows. – donut Mar 31 '10 at 1:38

Everything is faster then Cyberduck. The only advantage it has is it's free. – Josh K Mar 31 '10 at 1:39

Try this, I used to be work with coreFTP and filezilla, and I guess that is a better choise. compare this with CuteFtp.

Thanks for the feedback. I tried this one, but didn't perform better than CuteFTP. Actually the rate was just like SecureFtp/Filezilla. – Stan Mar 30 '10 at 23:47

Personsally, i Like WINSCP Its lightweight and comes as a portableapp from portableapps.com. 2 pane file manager with drag and drop support, or one pane explorer style. Very configurable and under active development.
