I want to crop (as in, take a subset of each frame, like when you crop a photo) a video in Windows Live Movie maker. Is there a way to do this, and failing that is there another free tool i can use to do that?

I've used Windows Live Movie Maker for a while, and am 99.99% sure that it doesn't provide the ability to crop frames in a movie.

VirtualDub (here) I've heard is a decent free video editor that can be used to crop videos (e.g. to remove those black bars and to rotate frames).

I'd use Avidemux. Free, and portable version avaliable for Windows. Download page , Crop howto . (Even supports multi-threading which was the original reason why I started to use it. Awesome software. :))

After trying both this and VirtualDub, i prefer the other. Thanks for the suggestion though! – RCIX Apr 9 '10 at 8:10

I use VirtualDub to crop video for Windows Movie Maker. I have made some video tutorials on how to do it: http://www.teachertrainingvideos.com/winMovieMaker03/index.html Look for the section on 'Solving Aspect Ratio Problems.

Downloaded and gave MPEG-Streamer a run. Fast and no issues so far. Enjoy

There is no crop tool, but when you right click there is a Split tool. Pick the parts you want to either delete or separate and click Split. Then simply delete all the parts and clips you do not want

You can't with the normal version but you may find that "auto pan and zoom" will get rid of some of the unnecessary information in your frames
