How do I make it go away?!?!?! It's always locking my files just because I have the damn file clicked!

It's in the file explorer.

Figured it, in your explorer window out go to Tools->Folder Options->General and select the "Use Windows classic folders" radio button.

Must be one of those "helpful" updates from Microsoft that knows better than we do what we want. I now can't find the "Use Windows classic Folders" radio button in Windows 7. And, I seem to be stuck with that "Select a file to preview" nonsense.

There's an icon in the upper right-hand side of the explorer window that is for toggling preview. Hover over it with the mouse and it will indicate "Hide the preview pane" do that and then go to Tools>Folder Options>View and click on the "Apply to All Folders" button. – garrett Dec 4 '10 at 22:35

There is a little icon in the top right hand corner which says "show the preview pane" when you hover the mouse over it. Click it to disable preview pane.
