Nostalgy, which adds very configurable keyboard control (e.g. 'S' then start typing a folder name and it moves current mail to that folder).

Absolute must have: Enigmail

Adds GPG/PGP support to Thunderbird. I'm surprised nobody else mentioned it!

Attachment Remember to stop you sending emails without the attachment if certain keywords (like "attach*") are in the subject or body of the email.

It's good but it's default (but editable if you know regular expressions or are willing to make a couple of informed guesses about how they work) configuration is a bit overenthusiastic. – Jon Hopkins Jul 27 '09 at 12:36

This, I believe, is built into the new version by default. Really great feature. – Charles Roper Aug 19 '09 at 18:02

Quicktext allows you to create templates for frequently sent emails. It allows you to add variables to easily "personalize" emails.

Mail Redirect is useful if you receive mail intended for other people. Or if you want to forward an email while having replies go to the original sender.

I use this daily to redirect emails sent to me into our support ticketing system – Josh Nov 10 '09 at 22:12

This addon isn´t only for Thunderbird. It works for all the "mozilla windows". My favourite: MinimizeToTray.

Display Mail User-Agent

As some commentors at that addon opine, I too use it to determine who might not like me to attach that Word 2007 document in my reply, or send HTML mail at all.

Send Later, as it lets you send a mail automatically at a time you specify. It's good if you are doing some work off hours and want to send it during the normal work day. Or if you just want to give yourself some time to change the message before it leaves your computer.

I use GMailUI mainly because it makes the Quick Search box actually useful.

I have set up a search folder that lists all my mail. I select this folder and with GMailUI installed, use the all: search modifier to search for any string in any part of all my messages. If it's there, this method will find it.

It's slow and buggy (sometimes it lists a false positive, could just be a Thunderbird bug) but I'm prepared to put up with that if there's a message I know I have that I have to find.

However, Thunderbird 3 greatly improves on search functionality, so hopefully soon I'll be able to do without it.

Unselect Message prevents Thunderbird from selecting the next message after you've deleted or moved the previously selected ones.

Seems to work with Thunderbird versions 1.0 to 1.6 only. Shame. – Lars Haugseth Jul 30 '09 at 15:59

Allows to place a copy of sent messages into the currently active folder or any other folder you choose, when you create the message. Usually the copies are placed into the 'Sent' folder. For replies, you may also move the original message.
