It's great! No need for fans anymore. Is it safe to put my pc in the refrigerator and forget all the fans and stuff? Its going to be ultra silent.

What? Seriously? – squircle Apr 14 '10 at 3:05
Good idea no? I just want a pc that makes no noise. – ULTRA_POROV Apr 14 '10 at 3:07
If you want a PC that makes no noise, why don't you use use all solid-state components? – squircle Apr 14 '10 at 3:16
@thepurplepixel: Even solid-state devices get hot. – Ignacio Vazquez-Abrams Apr 14 '10 at 3:22

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. See the FAQ for guidance on how to improve it.

One word: Frost.

Two more words: Surface area.

And two more: Condenser motor.

The first can be solved by dumping in a bunch of desiccant and making it airtight.
The second means you'll need big heatsinks.
The third means that it won't be silent.

Man you must be some kind of a cooling expert. – ULTRA_POROV Apr 14 '10 at 3:13
BTW you might have some insight into another cooling question i just posted. – ULTRA_POROV Apr 14 '10 at 3:21
The freezer will probably make the same sound with or without the computer in it. – Nifle Apr 14 '10 at 8:17

btw +1 for desiccant and making it airtight – Nifle Apr 14 '10 at 8:18

  • +1 for Ignacio: condenser motor makes your install not a silent system!
  • +1 for Christian: condensation is REALLY not a good thing when speaking about computer parts, even with desiccant.

If you really want to build a quiet computer, you're probably aware of water-cooling (i know it's quite expensive) but you can make use of passive cooling (no fans, only big heatsinks). There are also fans that turn at low speed (low speed = low noise), ...

SilentPCReview is a great website where you can find more information about silencing a computer. When building my computer, i get inspired by articles, forum and godlike DIY projects!

Seems to me that it would be ok, except that condensation can build up inside the fridge, which would certainly be bad for your hardware.

Also, how do you plan to access the I/O ports at the back, for your mouse, monitor etc?
