at home I have a very weak board that I connected to my TV to serve as an HTPC (Home theater PC). I came across many software solutions that are designed with P4 processors in mind, but not so many light-weight solutions.

for now I use geexbox installed on a disk-on-key as my temporary solution. does anyone here has experience with a better software solution?

agreed; totally OT – Mikeage Apr 30 '09 at 8:51
I honestly disagree. some IT pros may be asked to provide HTPC solutions from old computers. will re-writing the background description make the question more relevant? – Amir Arad Apr 30 '09 at 8:57

You could look into XBMC (http://xbmc.org/). It works smoothly on a first-gen XBox and there are builds for regular PC operating systems as well.

I used MediaPortal for a while on a slower machine, and it still performed fairly well.
