After seeing Oprah use Skype for 40 minutes straight, I am now in the market for a serious set of headphones with a microphone.

I have seen a couple out at the shops, but I am not convinced they will give me the best quality audio.

What headset with built in microphone would you recommend for Skype and online gaming?

I'm using the first one (logitech) and its awesome. When I plug in, it switches default audio device to the headset, and when I unplug, back to the optical output to my speakers. No more manually switching devices! – jtimberman Jul 29 '09 at 5:17
I'm using the second one (Plantronics) and it's great. Superb sound quality. – Johnny W Aug 3 '11 at 19:01

Having used a number of headphone makes over the years I now only use Sennheiser. They make several models of headset but have different models for VOIP and for gaming. Not being a gaming user I don't fully appreciate the difference in requirement but looking at their product range may give you pointers as to what features to look for even if you choose a different make: http://www.sennheiser.co.uk/uk/home_en.nsf/root/private_headsets_pc

Creative Fatal1ty Gaming Headset (+/- €25)

From a review:

Conclusion:

Once again, Creative changed my perspective on a few things. Apparently, my hatred for headphone gaming is starting to wane. The CMSS-3D technology lives up to the Creative standard and exceeds even my expectations and I was trying to set them pretty high.

So if it was up to me, I think next time I’ll reach for the headset and skip the beating. For $49 the headphones are a steal. I spent $80 on my Sennheisers (a year ago, the price may be comparable now) and the Fatal1ty headset seems to have blown them out of the water. I am a huge fan of Sennheisers, so this was a hard review for me to write. Like watching your boyhood hero being mowed down in a hail of gunfire. A little part of me died today, but there is a new hero in town.

If you’re in the market for some new headphones, don’t skip over the Fatal1ty headset. I would personally recommend this product to anyone.

Pros:

  • Noise Cancellation for Team Speak and Skype
  • 3D Effects When Combined With the Fatal1ty Sound Card Were Amazing
  • Gaming Experience
  • No Sound Crackle Throughout Each of the Tests
  • Price

Cons:

  • The Headphone Cushioning Was a Little Stiff to Start With. Possibly After Some Use it May Break in a Little Better.

Note: I'm not sure if there are really exceptions to the price vs quality ratio. Because I would imagine that you can get cheap headsets like this one that work just fine, but if you are willing to spend more you can get Sennheiser's that are a lot better.

Zalman (ZM-MIC1) make an excellent microphone that clips onto your existing headphone wire and has clips along it's wire to keep both cables together.

This means you don't have to sacrifice headphone quality for a built-in microphone, yet keep the convenience of an all in one unit.
