I am looking for a free, online-based accounting application, something like a web-version of QuickBooks or MS Money.

The catch here is that, of course, it needs to be free. I don't know if any company is philanthropic enough to offer this kind of service to individual users.

Free as in free-to-use on someone else's server, or free as in free to download and install on your server? – rjmunro Jul 27 '09 at 12:19

I think Buxfer is the best online account manager. it generates graphs for your tags, so you can see how much you've spent in each category; it's easy to track shared bills, and see who owes how much to whom; it has a mobile interface and Twitter integration (allowing you to do everything through Twitter DMs - SMS).

I'm not sure if it's quite what you're looking for, but mint.com is great!

It's not quite a true accounting program, but it allows you to put in all your logins (Their privacy/security looks good) for online accounts, then it does most of the work for you.

BambooInvoice is free, but needs to be installed on your own server.
