Which is the best partition manager software for Windows 7. I have been using Partition Magic in Windows XP. Now that it is not supported in Win 7, I'm forced to used gParted from Live Ubuntu CD.

Make sure you have a backup before you go mucking about with a partition editor. If that software hiccups at all you could end up losing everything on your hard drive. By the time you have that done, it'd probably be faster, easier, and safer to just use Disk Manager to delete D, expand C, recreate D, and restore your backup rather than wait on $product$ to shuffle your data around and resize the partitions. – afrazier Feb 23 '11 at 20:41

These aren't specifically Windows 7, but it should work just as well

Windows Vista (and presumably Windows 7) have partition resizing built in. This is the main use for a stand-alone partition manager. If you need to resize your partition these are your safest bet.

Probably one of the best system utility disks I've come across is the Trinity Rescue Kit. It does much more than partition management. It's a live cd with a ton of open source utilities for nearly anything you could think of.

Paragon (a German Company) has an excellent free Partition Manager, or a slightly more full featured version in its suite of superb tools in Paragon Hard Disk Manager. I have used Paragon for years and have never had a bad experience. The free version is available in 32 and 64 bit versions here: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-express/download.html

I have found that Partition Magic is the best mature partition tool. It has been around a very long time and has never ever let me down. It gives you a great deal of flexibility in extended or re-arranging the partitions on your disk.

Best? Mature? No way! It has been around a long time, yes, but it has not been updated in AGES. (Last around say 2004, & that was more of a rebranding from PowerQuest <or whoever> to Symantec.) Technologies have changed, disks, OS's, you name it. Technologies that were not known when Partition Magic was around. There is no way that I would ever use Partition Magic again. – therube Feb 9 '11 at 5:43

You could use the Windows Partition Manager (right button over My Computer > Administration > Disk Manager)

Or the usual Partition Manager http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-personal/

No, with Windows built-in partition manager the only way to perform needed operation is to delete D and then expand C. Of course, it is not option for me because I have data on D. Anyway I'll consider using Paragon product – DixonD Feb 23 '11 at 20:00

I use and can highly recommend GParted Live. It's a live boot CD (or USB or PXE) that will work with NTFS and other filesystems.

I would normally do this from an Ubuntu LiveCD because I use it as my primary personal OS, but for just this specific task I would go with PartedMagic
