If I return to my Windows 7 x64 computer after it has been idle for a couple of minutes, it will only respond for three seconds. After that, everything freezes for while before the computer starts working normally again. The freezing duration varies; it usually lasts between five and 30 seconds, but sometimes it gets stuck there forever, requiring me to hard reboot the computer.

This is very annoying. It's almost as slow as resuming from hibernation every time I leave it idle for long enough that the monitor turns off. What can I do about it?

Please post your make and full model number of your PC, sometimes there is a vendor specific fix. – Moab Dec 20 '10 at 15:32

You should also check that drivers are up to date and the bios is running the latest version.

If you have WiFi, one reason for such freezes might be Windows scanning for Wireless networks (even if you're already connected).

You may disable this behavior using WLAN Optimizer or Vista Anti-Lag.

Check the energy saving options to see if it doesn't turn off the hard drives after a few minutes or something like that.

I had a similar issue with an SSD drive I had. Make sure your drivers are updated(as Remy suggested).
