Possible Duplicate:
Looking for a good free image editor

I need a program that can do the following:

Open up an image either JPG or GIF. Resize the image (constraining proportions, and optimize for web.

This is all. Anyone know a good free program that can do this?

For something small that can open, resize and save both IrfanView (windows) and xnView (cross platform) work well and if I remember rightly both have a batch processing mode which can resize and apply filters to the output images.

Both viewers are quite compact, light on resources (by todays rather hungry and bloated standards) and have directory thumbnail viewers.

Yeah, I'm not sure why Paint.NET is a reason to dump Windows... Usually an awesome free piece of software is a reason to stick with a given platform, and Paint.NET is indeed a great package for its price. – Mokubai May 20 '10 at 19:07

How about GIMP?

However, if size matters, Photofiltre would be the way to go. You can hardly ask for more in 2 megabytes.

@Herbert Sitz - "simple" is subjective ... what is simple to one, can be very complicateed to another. I had no problems using gimp, and I have no experience whatsoever in photo editing. – ldigas May 20 '10 at 15:34

Alternatively, Infranview would do the job. Many time have I praised it's batch resizing/

Irfanview is great choice for a simple and easy-to-use photo editor. It's editing capabilities aren't as powerful as others, nor are they intended to be, since it's primarily a photo viewer that has grown a few editing abilities as time has gone by. – Herbert Sitz May 20 '10 at 15:23

ImageMagick would fit the bill. It's a collection of command line programs which allow you to do things like resizing, cropping, converting and compressing. The advantage is that you can easily process many files in one go.

It's standard on most Linux distros, also available for Windows & MacOS X.
