The good thing about books targeting a layman is that it is usually very engaging to read (not dry and boring like, say, school/university books).

Charles Petzold's Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software does this for explaining the underlying hardware in computers.

Is there a similar book for understanding computer networking?

Have you looked at Networking for Dummies? I've heard mixed reviews of the Dummies series - some appear to be better than others, so look before you buy.

There also seem to be a number of online guides like this one which seems to be an easy read.

The networking for dummies, certainally the one I read, is unfortunately horribly out of date. Unless they're updated it since last summer I'd give it a miss. – Joe Taylor May 26 '10 at 11:04
@Joe - thanks for that. As I said I've heard mixed reviews of the series so I'm not that surprised. – ChrisF May 26 '10 at 11:48
