I'm cs student and we did some unix programming at school, but most of use are using windows os. I have decided to go on ubuntu. Besides installing ubuntu and using it, what book will teach me the "must" things to know about *nix OS?

I really recommend Introduction to Linux a Hands on Guide, it's an excellent foundation to what's running under the hood on Ubuntu and a great jumping off point on the way to learning Linux: For programming, a good starting point would be to learn the Bash scripting language: After that, check out the Python programming language:

I found this book useful: Ubuntu for Non-Geeks, 4th Edition I started reading it before I installed ubuntu, to familiarize myself with it. Having taken the plunge though, it is a very user friendly system that is intuitive. One useful step would be to get a live cd and try running that, as this book focuses a lot on how to use the OS, and I found it useful to try things out when reading the book.

How about Ubuntu Help? Personally when I started to use Ubuntu, I made the switch on all of my home computers. It wasn't easy but it was definitely worth it in the end. Anything that I was able to do on windows I was able to do in Ubuntu and more. It just takes time and perseverance.
