What’s the best Remote Desktop Application?

Citrix GoToAssist is a really nifty little web application for customer support that allows you to take control of someones OSX, or Windows machine. Essentially, it works likes this:

  1. You log in to your management console
  2. You get a code
  3. You give them a code, and a website (fastsupport.com)
  4. They go there and enter in the code
  5. They accept the browser applet which installs a program on their computer
  6. You have control of their desktop

You can see their desktop, configure applications, etc. They can also see when you disconnect. It is really rather nifty, but it doesn't support Linux and it is rather expensive (660$ a year). Does anyone know of any alternatives to this? I'm looking for a solution as simple on the user as this one, that doesn't require firewall configuration or setting up ssh/vnc/rdesktop etc.

Look at What's the best Remote Desktop Application? I'd recommend TeamViewer from the list. – Sathya Jun 3 '10 at 18:44
It isn't really a duplicate. Not even half of those solutions have the ability for the server connect to the viewer, which is a predicate of /this/ question. (as compared to the viewer connecting to the server) – Evan Carroll Jun 9 '10 at 17:52

The simplest solution I know is UltraVnc SC (Single Click):

UltraVNC SC is a mini (166k) UltraVNC Server that can be customized and preconfigured for download by a Customer. UltraVNC SC does not require installation and does not make use of the registry. The customer only have to download the little executable and Click to make a connection. The connection is initiated by the server, to allow easy access thru customers firewall.

What is the differencebetween UltraVNC and UltraVNC SC?

  • Size: UltraVNC is about 850k while SC is only about 166k
  • SC can only do a reverse connection while the normal version server can listen to viewer connections.
  • SC can NOT be run as a service, no logon or Ctrl-Alt-Del is supported.
  • SC can only do File Transfers, Directory transfer is not yet supported (but will be soon).
  • SC don't use registry and password. Settings are preconfigured, password is not needed for an outgoing connection.

All the customer does is launch the program and choose a helpdesk person from a list.
No connection number, code, password or anything else to enter.
And it's free, too.

Worked absolutely great for me!!! And, I was able to get a viewer working on Linux ssvc. – Evan Carroll Jun 3 '10 at 22:12

I use the free-for-personal-use version of TeamViewer, which does require you to install a client.

But the paid commercial version has a client that doesn't need to be installed. It's cheaper than GoToAssist - you buy a lifetime license rather than pay a yearly charge.

It supports Windows, Mac, Linux and iPhone.
