Can anyone recommend an application that will automatically dim my monitors when it gets dark at night?

This could be accomplished using a cronjob with a simple script (at least under Linux). Maybe I'll write such a thing when I get home. – Bobby Jun 7 '10 at 9:54

One app to try

f.lux™ Better lighting...for your computer

it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.

Available for XP/Vista/7, OSX and linux

Flux (at least for OS X) doesn't affect screen brightness. What it does is that it automatically determines the time of sunset and sunrise from your location, and then uses a lower color temperature (warmer colors) between those times. There's a setting for transition time of either 20 seconds or 1 hour. Even the highest color temperature (Daylight, 5000K) is way too warm for any lighting situation. – Lri Apr 14 '11 at 16:51

A linux app

Redshift

Redshift adjusts the color temperature of your screen according to your surroundings. This may help your eyes hurt less if you are working in front of the screen at night.
