Can we add a "virtual-desktop" tag to this? – Frank V Aug 8 '09 at 17:51

VirtuaWin is a nice open-source project.

DeskHedron is a neat 3D option.

+1 for VirtuaWin, it's what I use all the time. Lightweight and simple UI. – jamuraa Jul 15 '09 at 13:58
Thanks for VirtualWin -- I was just looking for something like that and it is beyond perfect. – Frank V Aug 8 '09 at 17:58

From Mark Russinovich and sysinternals there is Desktops which will give you up to four virtual desktops. Available for free.

Dexpot is a great virtual desktop manager. It is free for personal use and is also available as a portable version.

Dexpot 1.4 turns your monitor into up to 20. It creates and manages virtual desktops and enables you to work far more efficiently and comfortably with many simultaneously opened windows on Windows 95/98/ME and NT4/2000/XP/2003/Vista (incl. x64).

Features include:

Desktop Manager
Small and unobtrusive: a faithful companion for presentations and every-day desktop switching.

Window Catalogue
Have you ever seen windows tiling? No? Well, it's about time then.

Desktop Windows
How can one describe such functional glory in three lines? Simply take a look, now!

Full-screen Preview
Microsoft XP Powertoy, just more beautiful, simple, and better. Full-size.

Settings
A pure dashboard which offers everything you need for total control.

Configure Desktops
It's hard to believe how independant virtual desktops can be.

Desktop Preview
In case you want to know what's up on other desktops.

Desktop Rules
This small but powerful module helps to distribute windows.

Microsoft has a free Desktop Manager that you can download from them which will allow you to use up to four different desktops at one time.

I would emphatically recommend NOT installing that. It is buggy as hell. I've had issues where I'm unable to log out or switch programs. – MJeffryes Jul 15 '09 at 13:22
This one really doesn't work that well (buggy as Ziggamorph mentioned) and it only works on XP as I understand it. – Frank V Aug 8 '09 at 17:52

when I used to run it, I didn't notice any issues - then I moved back to Linux fulltime, and the multiple desktop thing kinda went out the window :) ..(pun intended) – warren Sep 15 '09 at 10:29
